Most of the billions of dollars the United States has invested in rebuilding infrastructure in Afghanistan have been wasted. This became known from a report published by the Associated Press, a state agency that investigated the spending of the American state since 2008.

For about 13 years, the United States has spent more than $ 7.8 billion on the areas studied. The buildings and vehicles purchased with the money were mostly abandoned or destroyed, according to the Special Inspectorate for the Reconstruction of Afghanistan (SIGAR).

The organization's report says that only $ 1.2 billion of the $ 7.8 billion was properly spent, with buildings and transportation in good condition at a total cost of just $ 343 million. The report's findings suggest that government agencies that have allocated money to projects in Afghanistan should be concerned about spending it.

In July 2020, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the United States plans to fully withdraw its troops from Afghanistan by May 2021. He stressed that the US army has halved its military presence in the country.

The United States sent troops to Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack in New York.
